Indian gaur kills woman in village near Ooty

UDHAGAMANDALAM: A woman was killed by a stray Indian gaur near her home in the Ooty north range in the Nilgiris district on Saturday. The deceased woman has been identified as V Malarkodi, 45, Kodhumudi village. The village falls under the Nilgiris forest division.According to a forest official, Malarkodi was outside her house around 7am when a stray Indian gaur attacked her, throwing her to the ground. Hearing her screams, family members and villagers rushed to the scene, only to find her dead.On being informed, forest department officials arrived at the scene and transported the body to the Ooty Government Medical College and Hospital for postmortem. The department provided an initial compensation of Rs 50,000 to the victim's family. Forest field staff members drove the gaur back into the nearby forest area.Lately, Indian gaurs often enter residential areas of Ooty, Coonoor and Kotagiri towns as well as in villages in the Nilgiris district.
